He received his B.S. (1971) and MBA (1973) degrees from Indiana University. His Ph.D. degree in International Business and Marketing was awarded by Georgia State University (1978). His dissertation title "Formulating a Multi-national Marketing Startegy: A Deductive, Cross-national Consumer Behavior Model" was selected as one of only four finalists to compete for Farmer Dissertation Award of the Academy of International Business (1979). Dr. Yaprak's research and teaching interests include global marketing strategy, cross-national consumer behavior, and societal transformations and profiling Modernization patterns based on Psychological variables in selected emerging economies in Central and Mediterrenean Europe, South-east Asia and Latin America. Dr. Yaprak's research has been published in the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of International Marketing, Advances in International Marketing, Journal of Political Psychology, R&D Management, Management International Review, European Journal of Marketing, Journal of Advertising, International Marketing Review, Quality Management Journal and Management Decision, Simulation and Gaming Journal, Journal of International Consumer Marketing, Journal of Targeting, Measurement, and Analysis of Marketing, and the Proceedings of the conferences of the Academy of International Business, American Marketing Association, World Marketing Congress, European International Business Association, and the Academy of Marketing Science. Chapters and cases authored by him have appeared in several international marketing textbooks and scholarly books such as Country Images. Books such as International Trade: Regional and Global Issues, Multinational Strategic Alliances, and Product and Country Images. One of his co-authored articles published in the Journal of International Business Studies in 1987 was selected as one of only five articles considered for the JIBS Decade Award in 1997. Another co-authored article published in R&D Management in 1995 was selected to receive the Citation of Excellence Award by Anbar Economic Intelligence Citation Service, also in 1997. Dr. Yaprak is the co-editor of the 2000 Volume of the Advances in International Marketing titled Globalization, The Multi-national Firm and Emerging Economies. He is co-author of Trade Promotion Stategies in Developing Countries (UNCTAD/WTO Press, Geneva, Switzerland, 1998) and Internationalizing Business Education (Michigan State University Press, 1992). Dr. Yaprak has served as the Associate Editor for International Business at the Journal of Business Research, is (or has been) a member of the editorial review boards of the Journal of International Marketing, International Marketing Review, International Business Review, Journal of International Consumer Marketing, Journal of Asia-Pacific Business, and Competitiveness Review. He is a reviewer for the Journal of Marketing, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Global Marketing, The International Trade Journal, and Advances in International Marketing. He has developed interdisciplinary curricula and research programs on Eastern Europe and North America, and has co-developed decision support system software with international business applications. His consulting for the International Trade Center, UNCTAD/WTO (the United Nations) has taken him to China, Nepal, the Philippines, and Thailand. He is the developer of the EXPORTS software and co-developer of the MAPS expert system, and a co-developer of the PROGRESS simulation game. He has co-developed a Computer aided course on foreign market entry planning and an under-graduate program in Eastern European Business. He has also developed (or co-developed) courses on Global Product Development, US-China Business, The North-American Economy, International Business Anthropology and Marketing in Emerging Economies. He has been a panelist before national/inter-national audiences including the Faculty Development Consortium (1996), and the keynote session of the national conference (1991) of the Academy of Marketing Science and its World Marketing Congresses (1993, 19989, 1988, 1985); The national conferences of Academy of International Business (2000, 1983); the American Marketing Association's educator's conferences (1992, 1998) and Faculty Development Programs (1991, 1998); The International Conference of the European International Business Academy (1997); and, the International Conference of the Association for Marketing and Development (1986). Dr. Yaprak is the recipient of several awards including the Distinguished Faculty Award given by the School of Business Administration at Wayne State University (1985), the Wayne State University President's Award for Excellence in Teaching (1982), the School of Business Administration Graduate Award for Excellence in Teaching (1994 and 1998), and the School of Business Administration Distinguished Teacher Award (2000). He has developed and taught graduate (including doctoral) and undergraduate courses in international business and marketing at Sabanci University (Turkey), the University of Munich (Germany), the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, and, has led or co-led faculty development seminars at the Universities of South Carolina (4 times), Memphis (6 times), Windsor (1time). Dr. Yaprak's research has been funded by competitive grants awarded to him by the U.S. Department of Education (5 separate grants between 1992-2002), National Science Foundation (1988-99), the U.S. Small Business Administration (1989), and the DTE Energy (1994-96). He has served on national/international grant funding review panels for the US Department of Education (four separate programs including the prestigious CIBER competition four times and the national resource centers competition once), the U.S. Department of Defense (National Security Education Program), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. In addtion to his very active academic service to scholarly associations such as the Academy of International Business and the American Marketing Association, he has been an active service participant at Wayne State, at both the University and Business School levels. His consulting service to firms in the US and abroad has included advice on marketing strategy formulation. he has also provided advice to two and four- year colleges and universities internationalizing their business programs. Dr. Yaprak is married to Dr. Ece Yaprak, a professor of Computer Engineering, also at Wayne State. They live, with their three children, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. |
